The lid contains a concealed hand operated pumping device, which is revealed by pulling horizontally on a cleverly concealed grip, provided on its handle, recessed into the lid. The hand-pumping device is operated by pulling and pushing it horizontally into and out of the lid. This pumping action creates an effective vacuum within the item, which helps to keep cakes and other foods fresh.

Once the vacuum is created, the lid adheres tightly to the plate and creates a sealed unit.

There is a button in the lid, which, when depressed, releases the vacuum and allows the air to re-enter the item. At that stage, the lid is once again removable from the plate.

The reversible plate has a platform on one side, with four recesses to accommodate a four footed, removable stand, which is included with the item. The stand can be used to increase the storage space within the unit, facilitating two cakes, tarts, pies or other combinations of items.

The other side of the plate has a dish depression. The stand can be placed in this side of the plate as well. This side has even more usable storage space than the platform side.

The plate can also be used alone, in various ways, as an attractive serving plate or platter, without the lid.
